RYA Safety Boat

Introduction

The safety boat course is for those who use powerboats to provide support and safety cover for other watersports such as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. This course is ideal for members of sailing clubs and others wanting to get involved in sail racing as well as those wishing to pursue a career as an instructor in the watersports industry. It includes rescue techniques, safe recovery of people, methods of recovery and towing of craft and elements of race management and mark laying.

Boat Handling

  • Positioning in respect to Fleet
  • Standing off another craft
  • Coming along side underway
  • Dinghy (including high performance) and Windsurfers rescue
  • Towing
  • Mark Laying

Theory and Background

  • Meteorology
  • Emergency Action
  • IRPCS Rules
  • Rescue of other water users
  • Communication
  • Use of VHF and First Aid

Pre-course requirements:

  • Must be 16 or over;
  • Basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfing;
  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate must be held prior to this course
