MNTB – Maritime Entry into Enclosed Spaces (Industry Recognised)

As a critical health and safety component of working at sea, this course combines engaging theory with hands-on practical training. This maritime enclosed space course is designed to provide personnel with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely enter and work in enclosed spaces aboard vessels.

Course Overview

This course has been developed to meet the guidelines set by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and aligns with the latest safety requirements introduced under IMO Resolution MSC.581(110).

Adopted in June 2025 and effective from December 2025, these updated IMO requirements place greater emphasis on:

• Enhanced risk assessment procedures
• Improved gas detection, including CO₂ monitoring
• Stronger ship-to-shore communication
• Clearer safety responsibilities to reduce fatalities

This course ensures delegates receive up-to-date IMO enclosed space training, meeting both established MNTB guidance and the latest international safety standards.

Course Duration

• 1 day
• Combination of classroom-based learning and practical exercises

Certification

On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive an MCA recognised certificate in Enclosed Space Entry, demonstrating competence in enclosed space safety and operations in line with MNTB and IMO expectations.

Course Content

• Identification of enclosed spaces and associated hazards onboard a vessel
• Completion of enclosed space Permit to Work systems
• Safe atmospheric testing using industry-approved gas detection equipment
• Maintenance, testing, and calibration of gas detection instruments
• Practical self-rescue procedures
• Acting as a safety attendant during enclosed space operations
• Understanding hazards including oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, and flammable atmospheres
• Emergency response awareness (excluding full rescue operations)
