What is a Boatmaster?
A Boatmaster is a skilled professional responsible for the safe operation, navigation, and command of commercial vessels. Boatmasters work across inland, tidal, and non-tidal waterways, managing both passenger and non-passenger vessels while ensuring the safety of all on board.

Programme Details
- Duration: 18 – 24 months (training 1 day per week or block release)
- Level: Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
- Entry Requirements: Minimum Level 2 in Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills)
- Job Role: Must be employed within a role that aligns with the apprenticeship standard
- Flexible Start Dates and a bespoke delivery model
- *Minimum age: 16 years (the apprentice must be 18 years for the final assessment & RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam if required)
End Point Assessment (EPA)
The apprenticeship concludes with an independent assessment to test your knowledge, skills, and behaviours. It includes:
- Professional Discussion (60 mins, minimum 8 questions)
- MCA BML Oral Assessment (120 mins, minimum 11 questions)
- MCA BML Practical Assessment (4 hours, observed tasks)
